Companies of all sizes face big, strategic decisions in the coming months regarding their e-mail and collaboration environments. According to Intermedia, there’s over 120M licenses of Exchange 2000 and 2003 due for an upgrade and more than 100M users on Exchange 2007.

But what about the Cloud?

With cloud e-mail finally getting traction in the enterprise, the decision making gets considerably more complex. Enterprises can upgrade on premises email, Exchange 2003 – 2007 for example; they can move to the cloud and stick with Microsoft (Office 365 of Hosted Exchange); they can move to Google Apps; and they can create a custom hybrid environment. They can also do nothing and wait it out a little longer.

As with any strategic investment decisions, gathering data and comparing options is a critical part of the process. And it’s not easy to sift through the piles of marketing literature, analyst reports, whitepapers and case studies – the usual suspects in the world of enterprise software buying.
