Frames Per Second (FPS)

What are Frames Per Second?

FPS stands for Frames Per Second and is a metric commonly used in video context and computer graphics. FPS measures each individual frame or image displayed over a second of video and animation. A critical parameter to assess the smoothness and quality of movement in visual content.

The human eye tends to see motion as smooth at around 24 frames per second which is why video games, movies, and other multimedia applications aim for a higher FPS for smoother lifelike motion. For interactive applications, higher frame rates are often targeted to provide better response and immersive experiences. The targeted frame rates are typically 30, 60 or even 120fps.
