What is Latency?

Latency refers to a delay in the time it takes for data to reach its destination in a computer network, from its source. Typically measured in milliseconds (ms), it is crucial in identifying the responsiveness of applications and communication systems.

Latency can be influenced by quite a few factors within the network including propagation, transmission, queueing, and processing delays as well as Jitter. It is essential to have low latency in applications where real-time interactions are involved. High latency can lead to a less responive user experience, lag, and delays.
